Brownies, why not take part in our book club? Each month, we review a book. Sometimes they are new books and sometimes they are old classics that you'll find in your school library. Read them and tell us what you think.

Mr Gum and the Cherry Tree

by Andy Stanton

Set in the fictional town of Lamonic Bibber, the book follows nine-year-old heroine Polly as she tries to stop the grumpy old Mr Gum (who hates almost everything) from causing trouble. There are a number of crazy characters who provide a lot of fun, like Beany McLean - who loves speaking in rhymes, or the O'Leary clan who are named after days of the week. The book is full of unusual ideas and adventures!

Jenna, the Brownie Book Club Editor, thinks this...

This made me giggle out loud. Full of silliness and wacky ideas, it really appeals to your imagination and takes you to a world where anything is possible - a gingerbread man headmaster? Why not! Andy is an excellent writer and this is a book that I did not want to put down.

Charlotte thinks this...

I thought it was great! It was actually Mr Gum in the tree just trying to get their things. I thought it was fun. Polly's dog was huge and funny. I would give this book five out of five.

Nell thinks this...

I loved this book. I really enjoyed the part where the whopper of a dog comes in. I have read many of the Mr Gum books and when I heard there was another one I new I had to read it. This book was bigger than the other Mr Gum books I have read and that was good because I could enjoy it longer.

Pru thinks this...

It was really great it was so good that I read it in five days! Now even my sister wants me to read it to her.

I have read all the Mr Gum books and when I heard there was a new one I was desperate to read it. This is the best one yet and I honestly can't choose one good part because it was all amazing!

I just couldn't put it down! When mum said it was bedtime I shouted, ‘No!'. I picked my torch up and secretly read under the duvet.
